About Us

The Windsor Wood Carving Museum is the only Wood Carving Museum in Ontario, and only one of two in the country, we take pride in offering to our visitors an amazing collection of carvings from around the world. Our museum is located in a beautiful expansive room within the front of the Central Library, located in downtown Windsor.

Every aspect of carving, whether traditional or contemporary, historical or wildlife is represented and displayed in an intimate setting. The museum features over 300 carvings from Canada, the United States and abroad. The carvings are exhibited in large glass cabinets, allowing for a closer look and the opportunity to photograph them.

The quality of the carvings and the size of our facility make the visit very appealing for personal visits and tours. You will be able to view the museum fully in an hour or less, depending on your interest. There are artifacts, bird skins for study purposes, tools and wood samples on display.

Our trained staff will be on hand to answer any questions and provide tours by appointment.

Museum History:

In late 1992, the idea to establish a wood carving museum in Windsor was conceived. In the New Year, a small group of carvers met for dinner and decided to put the idea into action. Within a very short time, an executive was formed and there was no turning back.

It was decided that the museum would serve the public in an educational capacity, and, as such, would be a non-profit organization.

Fund-raising dinners, bingo's, carving expositions and addresses to city council were undertaken to bring in money and make people aware of the museum.

Thanks to the efforts of many hardworking individuals (carvers and non-carvers alike); enough funds were raised to rent the space at the Central Library on a high profile street, Ouellette Avenue.

On November 6, 1996, three years after that original dinner, the doors to Ontario's only wood carving museum opened, thanks to hard work dedication and a strong belief that it could be done.

Since its triumphant opening, The Windsor Wood Carving Museum has featured hundreds of carving ranging in subjects from the historical, contemporary, wildlife to caricature carving. All artwork is displayed in a brightly-lit one room setting.

The museum changes exhibits every nine months. It has grown steadily throughout the years and now includes works from not only carvers in the Windsor/Essex region but from Ontario, Quebec, Michigan, Africa, Asia, and New Zealand and beyond!

Also on display are tools from the past and other artifacts related to the art of wood carving.

Welcoming over 40,000 visitors to date, from across Canada, the United States, Europe, Australia, Asia and South America, The Windsor Wood Caving Museum offers guided tours for all age groups and live weekly carving demonstration.

Our on-site Hidden Treasures Gift Shop carries some of the most exquisite pieces found anywhere. The carvings and wood turned items are available in all price ranges to suit any budget. You will definitely find that perfect gift or souvenir for that hard to buy for person in your life.

It is with great anticipation that The Windsor Wood Carving Museum looks toward the future, and we especially look forward to seeing you!
