Gary Brocklebank

Gary began carving in 1987. He has competed in North American and World Championships at Ocean City, New Jersey. He has also competed in West Lake, Ohio; San Diego, California; Kitchener, Ontario; London, Ontario; Windsor, Ontario; Kingsville, Ontario; Point Mouillee, Michigan and St. Clair Flats, Michigan.

Gary has won between 700 and 800 ribbons for his incredible carvings which he carves from tupelo and then paints with acrylic paints. He started using an airbrush in 1996, which has now become his favourite tool as it cuts the time required to paint his carvings in half. His choice of medium, tupelo also saves him a great deal of time because it can be cut in any direction and smoothes far better than other woods.

He begins his projects by roughing out the tupelo with two or three knives (the same typed used by Master Carver Jett Brunet). The carvings are finished with power tools. After 100 to 200 hours, the finished product is ready for competition. His work, which includes decorative and smoothy waterfowl & shorebirds, songbirds, miniature decoys as well as fresh water and marine fish.

In his spare time, Gary loves to bike, fish and roller blade.

Gary is our Solo Artist for the months of November and December in the museum and is our Featured Carver on our new website.
